What are skin changes in the form of

scars?

A scar is a skin change that is most often the result of damage to the dermis and the replacement of the missing tissue by fibrous connective tissue. Scars can be hypertrophic when the amount of connective tissue is greater than the amount of tissue destroyed by the injury, or atrophic in cases of surgical procedures.

Although it will never be possible to completely eliminate the risk of scars, there is a way to treat and reduce them effectively. A happy childhood is full of falls from a bicycle, motherhood often involves a need to undergo a C-section, and even the most cautious adult is exposed to post-burn or post-surgical scars. The scar that results from a fall while learning to roller skate brings back pleasant memories, but if it is in a visible place, it can become a source of complexes over time. Some scars are not only problematic because they look bad. They can also cause contractures, an unpleasant pulling sensation or even pain.

The larger the area of injury, the larger the scar. Additionally, there is always the risk of formation of keloids or abnormal epithelialization of the scar. There are a number of ways to treat scars, but many of them are based on invasive procedures such as surgical excision, laser therapy, radiotherapy or the use of drugs. However, scars can also be treated by non-invasive methods, using gels or special silicone patches. The use of silicone preparations is the best method for treating scars – they help to effectively improve their appearance while inhibiting the access of bacteria and taking care of the patient’s comfort.
